There's a new USB4 now and it changes what you can plug into a laptop
USB cables are confusingly named and lack feature consistency across cords that look identical to the untrained eye. While the releases of the USB4 standard and the USB Type-C port were intended to address this decades-long problem once and for all, that didn't happen. USB4 quickly suffered from the same problems as the USB generations that preceded it — convoluted naming schemes, inconsistent feature sets, and poor branding. Now, there are two versions of USB4: USB4 and USB4 Version 2.0. The latter is the cable type you really want to get the fastest data transfer speeds, the quickest charging speeds, and the best display support.
