Tennessee woman left the city dreaming of freedom off-grid — Now she reveals the real cost nobody talks about

A Tennessee woman has revealed the real cost of living off-grid in today’s world.

For most of us, the dream of a simple life disconnected from the national grid is a stretch too far, but as one TikTok user has shown us, living off-grid is possible. Especially when comparing the costs between relying on utility companies for energy and the real costs of living disconnected.

How would you feel about completely relieving yourself from the burden of high monthly bills?

How the cost of power has evolved over the past decade

While the cost of renewable energy is getting cheaper as technology progresses, the overall costs of powering your home are getting a little out of hand.

In many parts of the world, infrastructure is the main cause of increasing monthly electric bills. Upgrading aging energy systems and distribution assets can often require millions, or in the worst case, billions of dollars.

As more and more of us turn to the renewable energy sector, additional costs are emerging as battery storage systems for power become more expensive.

Even as we use more efficient appliances in our homes, utility companies have fixed capital costs that need to be recovered, regardless of how much demand for energy comes from the populace.

Renewable energy: a decarbonization method to save the planet

The costs of renewable energy have plummeted over the past decade or so.

Since 2010, utility-scale solar power has dropped by an astonishing 90%, while the cost of wind power has fallen by 70%. This exemplifies the progress we have made in making sustainable energy more accessible for millions.

Recent advancements in renewable energy technology have made powering your home a simple affair with little to no input from us.

In 2024, over 90% of all new renewable energy projects commissioned provided energy for far less than conventional fossil fuel-based power. The reliance on oil has become an issue due to the volatile nature of the sector and how geopolitics influences the price of powering our lives.

We have seen new energy-generating systems that are deep underwater, harnessing the power of the waves for our energy needs.

A TikTok user with the handle @heywanderer has proven that an off-grid life can be achieved, for a cost, of course.

Tennessee TikToker reveals the real cost of living off-grid in modern society

@heywanderer has been living a simple life far from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

She has developed several systems that provide the energy needed for everyday life. The family emphasizes that an off-grid lifestyle can be reached by following a few simple steps. Firstly, the family uses rooftop solar panels to power the more energy-intensive appliances in their Tennessee home.

They pay particular attention to cleaning their solar panels to avoid “soiling”, which has become more of a concern for millions of us.

Cue the comments about how we aren’t really off grid because we have internet 🙃 #slowliving #offgrid #offgridliving #simplelife #cottagecore #farmlife

The cost of living off-grid is nowhere as high as you might think

Naturally, the initial startup costs would be high to create a self-sustaining home, but over time, the savings can be astronomical. @heywanderer states that their personal loan to get the project off the ground costs them around $500 a month, which they are paying off over two years.

They are still connected to the world of the internet as the family pays roughly $70 a month.

Propane for cooking and wood for heat cost the family $17 and $12.50, respectively. But their water is self-sourced and costs them basically nothing. As they use the power of the sun to power lights and cellphone chargers, their monthly electricity costs come in at $0.

The family has had enough of the increasingly high electric bills. They prove that living off-grid requires a little more legwork, but the overall savings can be phenomenal. Overall, the family spends roughly $614.50 to live the way they do. Would you be able to disconnect from the grid?
