A small, seemingly ordinary tool discovered nearly a century ago in Upper Egypt has proven to be a game-changer in our understanding of ancient technology. What was once cataloged as a simple copper awl has now been identified as a sophisticated rotary tool, dating back more than 5,000 years.

Published recently in Egypt and the Levant, the discovery pushes back the earliest known use of mechanical tools in Egypt by an impressive 2,000 years. Researchers from Newcastle University and the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, revisited the artifact.

From Misidentification to Major Discovery

When the artifact was first unearthed in 1922 at Badari, Egypt, it was misidentified as a copper awl. Cataloged and largely forgotten, it sat in obscurity for decades. It wasn’t until recent research, led by Martin Odler from Newcastle University, that its true nature was uncovered.

According to the research shared by Egypt and the Levant, magnification techniques revealed wear patterns consistent with rotary motion, suggesting that it was a drilling tool. This artifact, believed to be 5,300 years old, is now the earliest known example of a mechanical rotary tool in the region.

The artifact itself is tiny, only about two inches long and weighing just 1.5 grams, but its importance is anything but small. Originally dismissed as a simple tool for puncturing, further study showed that the object’s tip and wear marks were far more consistent with a drill used for rotary motion.

“The re-examination of this object has revealed something far more advanced than initially thought,” Odler said.

A Tool for Precision: The Bow Drill’s Function

Unlike basic hand tools, this device had a leather wrap that helped users rotate the drill faster and more effectively than by hand alone. This simple yet clever innovation would have been crucial for creating the intricate jewelry, furniture, and other crafts that were so important in daily life.

“This suggests that Egyptian craftspeople mastered reliable rotary drilling more than two millennia before similar tools were used elsewhere,” Odler explained.

Crafting Trade: Tool Composition Explained

Analysis revealed that the copper alloy used in the drill was mixed with arsenic, nickel, lead, and silver, according to a press release published in Newcastle University. These elements are unusual for the time and indicate that the Egyptians were experimenting with metallurgy long before they began building their famous monuments.

The addition of lead and silver, in particular, suggests that the ancient Egyptians were purposefully creating a harder, more durable metal than standard copper. Jiri Kmosek, a co-author of the study, noted that:

“The presence of silver and lead may hint at deliberate alloying choices and, potentially, broader connections with other ancient civilizations.”

For nearly two millennia, the bow drill remained an essential part of Egyptian life, used for everything from bead production to woodworking. Its design, simple yet efficient, remained remarkably unchanged.
