Archaeologists Have Just Discovered a 10-Foot-Long Painting Deep Inside a Cave in Alabama
A 10-foot-long monumental artwork painted in mud on a cave ceiling in Alabama is now the largest known Indigenous cave image in the United States. The discovery, made using advanced 3D imaging, reveals artworks that had remained invisible for decades.
Archaeologists identified the figure along with several other monumental glyphs dating back roughly 1,000 years. As stated in a recent study, these works were hidden in plain sight due to the cave’s extremely low ceiling, which made it impossible to view them in full.
The site, known as the “19th unnamed cave”, has long been recognized for its dense concentration of Native American cave art. Researchers emphasize its cultural importance, noting that such spaces were not merely shelters but held deep spiritual meaning for Indigenous communities of the Southeast.
A Giant Rattlesnake Is Changing The Story Of The Region
The most prominent figure discovered is a 10-foot (3-meter) rattlesnake, identifiable by its diamond pattern linked to the diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox). The findings, detailed in the journal Antiquity, state that this animal was considered sacred by Indigenous peoples in the region.

This evidence revisesd that was previously thought. As Jan Simek, a professor at the University of Tennessee, explained in statements reported by Science, large-scale figures had not been documented in southeastern caves before.
“These are special because until now, we have had no large figures from this area. And so that changes our perspective on what might be in these caves.” he said, “It brings the cave art of the southeast into the discussion of other monumental images that we see in different parts of North America.”
3D Technology Reveals What The Eye Cannot See
To uncover these images, researchers used photogrammetry, compiling hundreds of photographs into a navigable 3D model.
“This methodology allows us to create a virtual model of the space that we can manipulate,” explained Simek.

According to the study first author, the confined space prevented any clear, full view of the artwork on site. The digital reconstruction exposed five previously unknown large glyphs, demonstrating how technological tools are transforming archaeological research.
“You end up with a huge data cloud of exactly where everything is in 3D space on the ceiling, and from that we can shine lights on it virtually and begin to identify figures that are otherwise invisible,” ancient art photographer and founder of the Ancient Art Archive, Stephen Alvarez.
A Cave Rooted In Underworld Traditions
The cave extends more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was first documented in 1998. Earlier research published in Southeastern Archaeology identified a large chamber containing the majority of its artwork.
In the belief systems of Indigenous groups in the Southeast, caves were associated with the underworld, while earthen mounds connected to the upper world. This setting helps make sense of the imagery deep underground, which may be linked to ritual or spiritual meaning. Simek added that these figures;
“brings the cave art of the southeast into the discussion of other monumental images that we see in different parts of North America,” revealing a broader and more complex artistic heritage than previously recognized.
