2 police officers among 'multiple victims' shot in downtown Minneapolis

Two police officers were among multiple people shot Wednesday after gunfire rang out in downtown Minneapolis that left at least one person dead and six injured, officials said. 

Minneapolis police officers were at the scene of the shooting, which involved "multiple victims," the city said, including the two law enforcement officers. The officers were shot in the shin and abdomen, sources told Fox News. 

They were in stable condition. The suspected shooter was "down," sources said.

In total, seven patients were brought to a nearby hospital, the Hennepin Healthcare Medical Center told Fox News Digital. Three patients with gunshot wounds underwent surgery, the hospital said.

The shooting triggered a large police presence. 

"My public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place downtown Minneapolis this afternoon," Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz wrote on X. "State officials are on the ground to support local law enforcement and we will share more information as it becomes available."

In a subsequent post, Walz thanked law enforcement for "working to ensure the safety of our neighbors" in the area. 

"Minnesota is praying for our first responders," he wrote. Another states: "Pray for Minnesota."

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in nearby St. Paul were also responding to the scene. 

FBI Director Kash Patel said he was aware of the shooting and that the agency will offer any resources necessary to assist local authorities. 

The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police acknowledged the injured officers in a social media post. 

"Two Minneapolis officers were shot today answering the call downtown," the organization wrote. "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved — the wounded, their families, and the officers still holding the line tonight."

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison called the shooting "horrifying."

"My deepest thoughts are with those killed and hurt, including the police officers injured," he said. "I pray for their quick recovery. I fully support responding law enforcement & my office will help in all the ways possible."

Amy Klobuchar, the Democratic nominee in the Minnesota governor's race, said she spoke with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey about the "horrific shootings."

"My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones," she said. "Thank you to our courageous law enforcement."

Her Republican opponent, state House Speaker Lisa Demuth, said she was aware of what happened, and that she was "praying for the victims of this heinous crime, and I'm incredibly thankful for the massive response of our brave law enforcement officers."

The University of St. Thomas, which has a building near the area of the shooting, told Fox News Digital that it has locked down the Minneapolis campus.
