Why You Can’t Stop Procrastinating (It’s Not Laziness)
In the 1990s, a Marine Corps general looked at his incoming recruits and called them a bunch of wet socks: no drive, no follow-through, no ability to make themselves start. Thirteen weeks later, those same recruits were self-starters, and it had nothing to do with yelling "try harder." I spent years reporting The Power of Habit, digging into the science of why we avoid the things we most want to do, and it turns out procrastination has almost nothing to do with willpower. It's not a flaw in your character, it's a loop: an uncomfortable feeling you're avoiding, and the sweet relief your brain files away as a reward every time you escape it. I'll walk you through the three moves that break the loop (and yes, I procrastinated while writing the book on habits. The irony is not lost on me).
